What is a SEIT?
Special Education Itinerant Teacher (SEIT) services are provided by a certified teacher who promotes the growth and independence of a child with developmental delays in an early childhood setting by meeting their Individual Education Program (IEP) goals. These services are provided through direct services and support to children, as well as consultation to parents and early childhood professionals. SEIT teachers work with young children with disabilities participating in early childhood programs.
What Services Does the SEIT Provide?
The certified special education teacher would provide a written report with goals and remediation strategies, designed to maximize the child's independence in the classroom. SEIT services are individualized to the needs of the child, and may include:
Direct assistance to the child through therapeutic services
Implementation of the child's Individualized Education Program (IEP)
Implementation, coordination, and monitoring of the child's behavior management program
Collaboration with nursery school directors and teachers
Participation in Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE) meetings
Coordination of the child's educational program with teachers, therapist, and parents
Opportunities for parents to partner in their child's education
Who Can Receive SEIT Services?
SEIT services are for children 3-5 years of age who are classified as a preschooler with a disability. SEIT services are individualized to the needs of the child and are provided in the areas of cognitive development, communication skills, social and emotional development, self-help/adaptive skills, and fine and gross motor skills.
